McSwain School Rules, Safety & Traffic Reminders

Hello McSwain Families,

I hope you are well. As we continue through the trimester, this is a good time to review our school rules and expectations. Please review these reminders with your child to help keep our campuses safe, clean, and running smoothly.

Beverages and Snacks

  • Energy drinks, gum, sunflower seeds, and nuts in the shell are not permitted at school. Water is the only beverage allowed in classrooms.

School Grounds and Playgrounds

  • Please help keep our school grounds clean and litter-free. Food is not allowed on any playground.

Toys and Personal Items

  • Toys and personal items—including smartwatches, cell phones, radios, iPods, tape/CD players, water guns, electronic games, yo-yos, personal sports equipment, and laser pointers—should not be brought to school or school activities. Personal sports equipment used for organized school athletic teams is an exception.

  • Prohibited items will be confiscated and held in the school office for a parent or guardian to pick up.

Recess Rules and Expectations

  • Students are expected to follow the established recess rules and expectations for their respective campus, East or West, and follow staff directions.

Drop-Off & Pick-Up Reminders

Please take a look at the traffic refreshers. These practices have been established to ensure that students remain safe and we follow applicable traffic procedures. It should be noted, we do routinely have law enforcement come and help in our traffic enforcement to ensure that no rules are being violated.

Drop-Off

  • Grades TK–3: West Campus drop-off zone

  • Grades 4–8: East Campus drop-off zone

  • Students on both campuses: Drop off at West Campus. A crossing guard will assist older students in crossing to East Campus.

  • All students crossing Scott Road must use the designated crosswalk.

  • Parents/guardians should remain in their vehicles.

  • Pull all the way forward and have students exit from the passenger side.

  • West Campus: Enter from Highway 140 onto Scott Road.

  • East Campus: Enter from Vaughn Avenue onto Scott Road.

Please follow these designated routes when dropping off students. Do not drop off students along Scott Road. Doing so creates unnecessary safety concerns, traffic congestion, and confusion during morning drop-off.

Left turns into either campus from the opposite side of the street can also contribute to traffic backups and confusion. Following the designated direction of travel and using the designated drop-off zones helps keep traffic moving safely and efficiently for everyone.

  • Campus opens to students at 7:30 a.m.

Afternoon Pick-Up: Grades TK-3

  • Enter West Campus from Vaughn Avenue, turn onto Scott Road, and enter the parking lot.

  • TK/K: Library gates

  • Grades 1-3: Front office gate

  • West Campus siblings: Pick up together at the library gate.

  • Exit via Scott Road and Vaughn Avenue.

Afternoon Pick-Up: Grades 4-8

  • Travel down Gurr Road, turn right onto Vaughn Avenue, and join the pick-up line.

  • Vehicles will enter the East Campus parking lot beginning at dismissal time.

  • Remain in your vehicle. Staff will ask for your student's name and bring your student to you.

  • Exit toward Highway 140.

Students on Both Campuses

Students will not be escorted between campuses during afternoon dismissal. To pick up your child, please either remain in your vehicle and follow the established pickup route or park in a designated parking area and walk to the pickup location to meet your child.

Students may not walk to a parked vehicle unaccompanied. A parent or guardian must accompany them.

On a regular bell schedule school day, after picking up your West Campus student, please exit and follow the designated route to join the East Campus pick-up line.

Please refer to the traffic maps for the designated routes.
